At first glance, at least, this looks like a winner. 70mm is a nice length, a drop-in replacement for the 105mm many photographers carry as a go-to lens. Thow in 1:1 macro at a minimum 10.5in, and what's not to like? It also features Sigma's "focus limiter switch" to improve autofocus response times, and the EX rating means coated, SLD glass for bright, flare-free shots with low CA. As always, I'll wait until I see it in action--or at least see the MTF chart--before I put down any money, but for $570 MSRP, this looks like a steal.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

2006 TIPA Awards

Filed under: Canon, Nikon, Reviews, News, Lenses, Sigma, Nikkor
The 2006 Technical Image PressAssociation (TIPA) 2006 European Photoand Imaging Awards have been announced. There are 36 categories, but some of the highlights:

D-SLR Entry Level: Nikon D50
D-SLR Expert: Nikon D200
D-SLRProfessional: Canon EOS 5D
D-SLR D-System: Hasselblad H2D-39
High-EndProfessional System: Sinar M System
Digital Back: Leaf Aptus 75
ConsumerLens: Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC
Professional Lens: AF-S VR Micro Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED

Looks like solid choices all around, although I was a littlesurprised by the glowing review of the Nikkor lens; I'm a little suspicious of the built-in vibration reduction. Butthen I'm suspicious of most new technologies until they prove themselves. Looks like VR may be ready for prime time.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
