Digital Photo of the Day

Exif Information:
Camera: Canon PowerShot A95
Expsure: 15 Seconds
Aperture: f\4.0
ISO: 50
Lens:7.8 - 23.4mm
Focal Length: 7.8mm

Photographer's Note:

This is part of the gen1 series of images, with my first "generation" of LED toys (It's a breadboard, some resistors, a 9v battery, and LEDs that I swapped out) and one of my friends who agreed to model for me.

This is a long-exposure (15 second) shot where I wave the LEDs around and both use it to "paint" with light onto the subject, but also to form squiggly patterns in the background. The only post-processing I did was cropping.

This one uses UV LEDs, but they mostly turned out blue in the picture. You can see just a smidge of purple here.

Survey: How do you print?

questionWith retailer in-store printing on the rise, online printers becoming even more competitive and at-home printers even more affordable, what do you use? I personally have tried a bunch of online photo finishing places such as Yahoo!, Snapfish, and Ofoto. For large prints I was very happy with the finishing company that Yahoo! outsources to. Recently I have heard from a few different photographers that Shutterfly had great color reproduction. I am going to give them a shot next.

What does everyone else use? Pointers? Horror Stories?

Fujifilm FinePix S9500/S9000 Previewed

Fujifilm FinePix S9500Fujifilm has entered the advanced compact digital camera arena with the 9 megapixel S9000 (US name) / S9500 (Europe). LetsGoDigital has gotten their hands on a preproduction model and has written up a preview.

Highlights include a thumbs up on reduced noise at higher ISO settings. They atribute this to the 5th generation Super CCD HD sensor. This is a good becuase other advanced compacts have gotten bad marks for noise even at ISO 400.

The LCD display is very adjustable, but you have to toggle between the EVF and the LCD. Check out the preview for more information. It looks like a pretty sexy camera.

Should You Buy a Warranty?

warrantyI was clicking through the New York Times online and came across an article on warranties. Warranty sales are big business and the Times suggests $15 billion a year. A lot of companies expect warranty and support sales to be above 15-20% of their business (more if the market will bear it).

The key to any warranty contract is to read it and question it. Most places give you 8-10 days to buy the extended warranty after the purchase. My advice is to take the contract home and then research the product and warranty (if possible). See if other comsumers have reported problems with the same product. Even before you buy the product it is not a bad idea to shop around. Some retailers provide much better warranty, maintenance, and support than others.

Keep this in mind when shopping online at sites like Ebay or some of those low-priced camera clearing houses. You may save a few bucks and not have to pay sales tax, but what do you do when your camera breaks?

The Budget Photographer

The Budget PhotographerSo we have all gone out and spent hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars on our digital camera. Then we have spent hundreds of dollars on tripods, and lenses, and bags. Well here are a few inexpensive items that you have overlooked that should be in everyones gig bag. They can get you out of trouble in a pinch and they are less than $10.

The Lens Cleaning Kit from Adorama… $9.99
Love you camera by keeping it clean, it takes just a few minutes and will extend the life of your camera and your lens. This is a must have for every camera owner (beach sand is a digital camera's worst enemy).

U/V Lens Filter from Sunpak… $9.99
If your lens sports threads and can take filters you owe it your camera/lens to put a UV filter on it. It increases contrast and color saturation by reducing the amount of ultarviolet light coming into the lens. More importantantly it protects the lens from scratches (much cheaper to replace than a new lens).

Cap of Pringles or Tennis Ball Can Cap ….$1.29
If you need to custom white balance then keep one of these guys in your camera bag. There are professional products out there that work great but don't make the less than $10 cut. Just place the cap over the front of your lens, point at your subject and take a shot. Then follow the instructions for custome white balancing your camera.

Gaffers Tape…about $ 4.29
Gaffers Tape can be purchased at most arts and crafts stores and is a must have if you are a busy shooter. Tape up reflectors and backgrounds without leaving a sticky residue.

Have any cheap tricks? Let us know.
