The second interesting item in the O'Reilly catalog, also released last month, was Glenn Hornibal's Commercial Photoshop Retouching: In the Studio. this one is the polar opposite of the retouching cookbook; it's aimed squarely at photoshop experts, not newbies, and deals with photoshops guts and advanced features. The goal here is to help professionals under deadline develop custom tools and workflows to create great pictures that don't look retouched in record time, and targets a wide range of graphic design professionals, not just photographers. The details a re a little skimpy, but it looks like there will be plenty of discussion of batch processing and module and plugin modification and design.
