Westinghouse today announced their new Digital Photo Frame, a 320x234 pixel 5.6" LCD screen. It accepts the full range of flash media and comes with 8MB built-in flash memory for uploading pictures via USB even without card. Supported formats are JPEG and AVI, and the frame has options for rotating images, slideshow, and single image viewing. It looks like a nice little display unit, but at $149 it's still trop cher to find a spot on my desk. The resolution also seems a little low considering their competitors are putting out a 4x6 with 740x480 resolution. Of course, it's $100 more. I'm looking forward to watching Westinghouse's progression here, though. They have the resources to make the ecnomies of scale work for them if they want to, and if we start seeing reasonbly priced 3x5" and 5x7" frames with decent quality displays turning up at Targets and WalMarts this Christmas, we may finally see this technology take off. Although the AVI/Motion JPEG-in-a-frame is a little creepy, in a Harry Potter sort of way.

1. This isn't really a new announcement... The Best Buy I work at has had these on our shelves for about a week, maybe two, by now.
