Convincing Black & White Digital Images

black and white grapesWhen I first started converting my color shots to B&W images I did it the easy way by desaturating or worse converting my shots to from RGB to B&W. These methods, though effective in removing color, reduce the quality and overall tone of the image. I used to think that this was just the way it was. Was I ever wrong. Here are a couple of quick tutorials to get you started making your B&W conversions the right way.

Adobe has a downloadable PDF that explains the best way to convert your images to B&W if you are using Photoshop CS. Debbie Grossman over at Popular Photography has also posted a tutorial on B&W conversion in her Digital Toobox column. Other software packages may not have the same level of control but might have a feature that will help such as a filtered B&W conversion effect.
