How to Work Curves

Manipulating curves in your photo editing software can be a very powerful skill because it gives you control over the tonal quality of a photograph. This means manipulating the black point, white point, gamma, and color channels. In Adobe Photoshop there are a couple of different ways to accomplish this.

The first and easiest way to manipulate curves is to use the Auto Levels, Auto Contrast, and Auto Colors options. Second would be to open the curves dialog box. Photoshop will allow you to add 14 separate adjustments to the curve line.

photoshopOur sister blog The Unofficial Photoshop Webblog has a post and a link to a great curves tutorial. This should get you started, the rest is just experimentation. Remember to use an adjustment layer so changes can be easily undone and the original image stays intact.
